Very high pricing for UPS Worldwide Expidited from US

An order for shipping a small item from St. Louis to an address in the US Virgin Islands came back with a cost of $267 through UPS Worldwide Expidited. When the client looked up the pricing on Starship, the price, everything else equivalent, was $130.
An order today from the Netherlands, again for small items, came back with a shipping price of $365.
Shipping prices in the US seem to be fine but any international orders, the shipping prices is extremely high.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
Thanks, David

The first step is feeding the same origin/destination/weight details into UPS's website. Do the rates come out close to yours? If so, that's just what UPS is charging for international expedited (air) shipping.
If you do a lot of UPS shipping, you can always contact your UPS account rep and get set up for 'negotiated rates'. Negotiated rates are much cheaper than retail UPS rates. Once your UPS account is configured for negotiated rates you'll need to adjust the UPS gateway settings for negotiated rates as well.
At that point, your website rates for a given origin/destination should be much cheaper than what UPS shows when calculated on the UPS website. The UPS website always gives back retail rates.
Often times USPS can be cheaper for international, but it'll also be slower.
