Hi Steve,

From what angle are you approaching this?

Shipping Angle
You want the customer to be able to place an order online automatically, and not incur shipping costs because they will pick it up? Create a shipping method called, "In-store pickup", no cost, that the customer can choose at check-out and it will take care of the shipping problem.

Payment Angle
You want the customer to be able to place an order online automatically, without accepting a credit card online? You can make a payment for that, we use a payment call "Check" or "In-house Swipe".

Unless you are a business owner like myself, the significance of this would not be understood by the general public or even your basic developer. Credit card rules are the ones to watch out for here. Any customer that places an order online with a credit card and enters credit card information, the transaction is considered (card not present). However, if the customer picks up the merchandise, even after entering the credit card information on the online order, or the customer sends an employee to pick up the merchandise at the last moment, the transaction becomes (card present), and the rules of fraudulent chargebacks, things are now completely different.

For any card present transaction, there must be proof that you had the card in your hands, the best proof that you have is swiping the card, if you're not able to swipe the card, then take an old-fashioned credit card copier with carbon paper and make an imprint. Of course this is only going to work for maybe some old-fashioned American Express cards that are not flat, like your current MasterCard or Visa's. Your choice then is to make a copy of the front and back of the credit card.

A bigger problem is, when the cardholder sends the driver from the company to pick up the merchandise after he pays for it online. You need to watch out for this one, because all the cardholder has to do is dispute the charges and you are 100% liable. Also you have no proof of the required signature delivery services, like UPS or FedEx to back you up. By the way, forcing the cardholder or driver to sign a pickup receipt at your office is insufficient for the credit card companies and the issuing banks point of view, when trying to fight a chargeback. - Just read your merchant agreement.

What we do for customers that we know, we asked the cardholder to take a picture of the credit card using a cell phone with the first part of the credit card numbers blocked, we asked for a picture front and back. We then keep the card picture on file. Otherwise the cardholder must give the credit card to the driver, so we can either swipe or make a copy and keep on file, and even this is no guaranteed in the event of a customer disputing a chargeback that is considered fraudulent.

Any face-to-face contact with an online order involving a credit card, will automatically become a card present transaction situation.

32 years and 150 million dollars in sales later, one tends to learn many lessons.

Please note we are using version 9.0.4

So again what angle are you approaching this from?

Ray,
Thanks for the reply! I believe creating a new shipping method will work. Thanks for all the insight into payment issues!
