I noticed that [[Widget:LoginStatus]] is included in the Footer Links (Dark) HTML Snippet. Is there a trick to allowing my own widgets work to be included in HTML Snippets the same way? I could not get it to work.

Should work for any widget. Make sure you have properly decorated your class as a widget ex:
Code:
[RegisterWidget(DisplayName = "Multi Configurator", Category = WidgetCategory.General, Description = "Displays a dropdown choice of all configurators and renders the appropriate individual configurator upon selection.")]
public ActionResult MultiConfigurator(MultiConfiguratorWidgetParams parameters)

and also make sure when you're adding the reference in an html snippet, do it in the raw HTML - don't just type in the html editor window like regular text.

Code:
[[Widget:MultiConfigurator]]
