Is there a way to default the choice for recurring annual orders to "Manual" instead of "Automatic"? If so, how do we do this? This change should be made to prevent people from accidentally choosing it (resellers in particular) or choosing it when it’s a payment method that is not supported for 2.jpg (8kb) downloaded 0 time(s).automatic renewal.

I can request it has a feature in a future version, but not likely it would have the functionality you're looking for with regards to changing the default choice depending on the payment method or who is using it.
To set your own default, you would need to customize the code.

Thank you Katie for confirming that there is no setting that would automatically default recurring subscriptions to "Manual" instead of "Automatic". We would want any product that has an automatic option to default to Manual and it would not be customized based on product or payment method. We would like to offer them an Automatic renewal but they should choose it instead of it defaulting that way as people are inadvertently signing up for annual automatic renewals and then getting upset that there is a subscription that they didn't "choose".
