When editing the website from the storefront side you can add the widget,"More Category Items".
When you click on the wrench icon one of the options is "Display Mode". There are only two options, sequential and random.
It would be nice to have the products show in the sorted order they are set up in on the admin side of the software.

Apparently, this widget bypasses the sort order predetermined in the layout.
