Based on previous posts, I would like to share my insights since I've done SEO for decades.

The URL rewrite in the admin section is completely dangerous. It should be removed or somehow locked up with a password or it should be an external program that somebody who knows what they're doing can run.

There should be a backup feature, we have already implemented this, in the database table itself. Right now, we have a backup field for the lower URL and the URL itself. Once we get the URLs to a certain point, and we are happy with them, we instigate a backup to these two other fields in the same table, in the event, we need to restore an individual URL or the entire structure.

A SQL statement will not work when it's comes to duplicates, because it's it all or nothing approach. You have to loop in order to identify duplicates, again I have done this many times in Pascal.

I hate this feature when I first saw it, because I knew how dangerous it is. It is never a good idea to have someone click a button wipe out years of hard work.
