I noticed that AC 9 is Avalara Certified. A couple of questions...
1. How are order modifications handled? In AC7 we have to manually go into Avalara and update things because the AC Admin "Recalculate Taxes" button deletes all of the taxes.
2. Does tax exempt work properly? In AC7, it works for the AbleCommerce provider, but Avalara still calculates and applies taxes to the order.

Re-Calcualte Taxes feature is still not supported for Avalara in AC9. So, you have to do it manually if order taxes are recalculated. For Avalara, we have the Tax Exemption feature implemented, if its not working for you, then please provide more details about the specific scenario. You can enable debug logs and validate if the user Tax Exemption Reference number is being sent properly under "ExemptionNo". Log file location: App_Data\Logs\AvaTax.Log Thanks. What is the correct way to modify an order then? Cancel it and create a new one?
Seems odd in these days of automation that we have to manually log in to Avatax to update orders.
With regards to the tax exempt question, we are still on AC7 and it doesn't work there. Are you implying that it should work in AC7, or in AC9?

Could the Recalculate feature be programmed to void the original tax document, recalculate the taxes, and create a new tax document based on the current order contents? Not sure if you would use the original order date or the current date for the transaction.

When we first implemented AvaTax, the only API option was to commit the tax with the new order. This would be fine except in cases where an order edit needs to take place. We've always had strong order editing features, but that can cause a lot of problems in systems not designed for the flexibility (e.g. accounting, tax, etc)
Today, however, Avalara offers more API choices which will give us an opportunity to enhance our integration. We do have plans to implement AvaTax in such a way that merchants can select an option during the configuration that will allow you to commit or not commit taxes at time of sale. I haven't looked at this for several months, so I can't remember the specifics.
I believe that this will need to be integrated sooner than later. Then we can offer the recalculate tax feature with this service.
Thanks for considering version 9. After using version 7, this would be a big upgrade jump for you.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
